Tohri Wellbeing

Our minds are incredible problem-solving engines, capable of intricate reasoning and abstract thinking. However, this extraordinary capability sometimes leads us into a peculiar trap – Complexophilia. It’s the love of making things more complicated than they are. In this article, we’ll delve into this tendency, its consequences, and how embracing simplicity can lead to greater success.

The Complexophilia Conundrum:

Complexophilia, the propensity to overcomplicate simple issues, often affects individuals who possess high levels of intelligence. Why? Because simple problems don’t require the full deployment of their intellectual arsenal. As a result, they may invent alternative strategies that involve diving deep into complex concepts, such as free-radicals, short-selling, or linguistic theory, just for the thrill of it. This not only strokes their ego but also makes them feel smarter than the average person.

The Forgotten Basics:

Unfortunately, this love for complexity comes at a cost. Those who overcomplicate problems often forget the basics. Instead of sticking to straightforward, effective solutions, they replace them with intricate, less successful approaches. For example, focusing excessively on understanding free-radicals might overshadow the importance of maintaining overall healthy eating and exercise habits.

Simplicity’s Difficulty:

Ironically, for smart individuals, simple answers can be the most challenging to accept. Simplicity leaves fewer loopholes to avoid putting in effort. Many might say, “I know what to do, but it’s still very hard.” However, accepting the conjunction of simplicity and difficulty allows you to concentrate your efforts effectively.

Personal  Experience
Reflecting on my own experiences, I recall instances where I was drawn to complexity. Often it was regarding themes that secretly scared me, or things I was deeply avoiding. Making it complex in my mind would take away part of the shame of not actively changing the thing that was bothering me. It gave me a reason to avoid, or to not step into my power. Because changing would be really really hard. However, with time and introspection, I came to realize the fallacy in this mindset. Things that would give me clarity and new perception where found in the mondain of day to day life, literally seeing other people doing something could make it reachable, watching a movie, getting out of my loop of daily life. And of course one of my favorite tools, psychedelic substances. It was in moments of clarity, when I embraced simplicity, that true breakthroughs occurred.

The Power of Simplicity in Key Areas:

  1. Fitness: Going to the gym at least four times a week.
  2. Health: Avoiding junk food.
  3. Blogging: Sticking to a writing schedule.
  4. School: Showing up for every class.
  5. Languages: Daily practice in speaking and reading.
  6. Money: Spending less than you earn.
  7. Social Life: Meeting with friends regularly.

”The art of simplicity is a puzzle of complexity.”
Douglas Horton

Complexity vs. Execution:

“Complexity is the enemy of execution.” When we let complexity cloud our judgment, our ability to execute simple solutions diminishes. To succeed, you need to commit to simple actions and align them with your aptitude. This combination makes you unstoppable. Remember, failure is inevitable; it’s your response to it that determines your success.

The Dangers of Overthinking:

Overthinking, a common pitfall for individuals prone to complexity. Smart individuals often have a knack for seeing multiple angles and are well-rewarded for it. Yet overthinking can lead to paralysis by analysis, hindering progress and innovation. Smart individuals, in particular, may find themselves ensnared in a web of overanalysis, unable to discern simple solutions amidst the noise of complexity.

Conclusion

In the labyrinth of overthinking, simplicity emerges as a beacon of clarity and insight. By acknowledging the dangers of overanalysis and embracing the power of simplicity, we can chart a course towards greater fulfillment and success. Recognizing the signs of overthinking is the first step toward liberation, and by cultivating mindfulness and embracing uncertainty, we can reduce its grip and reclaim control over our thought processes. As we embark on this journey of self-discovery, let us embrace the complexities of the human mind with humility and curiosity, knowing that the path to lighter living begins with a single step. Stay tuned for future exploration as we unravel the mysteries of the mind and uncover the keys to unlocking our full potential.
